Course Details
Summary:
This course will consist of a zoom webinar where ITE faculty and staff will present lectures on the fundamentals of conducting a meta-analysis, including establishing eligibility criteria, performing a literature review, abstracting data, and pooled statistical analysis. Students will also have the opportunity to sign up for individual consultation with the course directors about their specific projects.

Course Format: Lectures are pre-recorded and hands-on exercises and group discussion will take place during a live zoom webinar.
No prior experience with meta-analysis is needed!
Objectives & Goals:
- Guidance on systematic literature reviews in PubMed
- Instruction on inclusion/ exclusion criteria and overall article quality review
- Basics of article information abstraction and meta-analyses table 1 creation
- A review of the statistical concepts underlying meta-analytic methods
- An introduction to the coding necessary to perform meta analyses in R
- A deeper understanding of benefits and challenges of conducting a meta-analysis
Topics Covered:
- Overview of meta-analysis
- How to perform a systematic literature reveiw for a research question
- Meta-analysis study selection and article quality review
- Introduction to meta-analysis statistical analysis
For an additional cost students can sign up for an individual consultation for their own meta-analysis with an ITE staff member
Additional services include:
- Meta-analysis inclusion and exclusion criteria/ abstract review
- Article quality review
- Data abstraction/ Table 1 development
- Making forrest and funnel plots

Dr. Taioli i
s the Director of the Institute for Translational Epidemiology and Associate Director for Population Science, Tisch Cancer Institute. She is a Professor in the Department of Population Health Science and Policy, and Thoracic Surgery at Mount Sinai. Dr. Taioli’s research focuses on epidemiology, cancer epidemiology and health disparities.
Maaike van Gerwen, MD, PhD
-Assistant Professor, Otolaryngology
Dr. van Gerwen
is a physician and cancer epidemiologist whose research focuses on thyroid cancer and environmental risk factors. She has experience in literature reviews and meta-analyses.
Stephanie Tuminello, PhD, MPH
- Instructor, Thoracic Surgery, Institute for Translational Epidemiology
Dr. Tuminello is an Instructor in the Department for Thoracic Surgery and Institute for Translational Epidemiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Tuminello is a clinical and molecular epidemiologist focused on lung cancer. Her research interests include immune dysregulation and cancer development, clinical and molecular biomarkers for response to cancer treatment, and the relationship between accelerated aging and carcinogenesis.
Gloria Willson, MLIS, MPH
Gloria is the Director of Education & Research Services, Levy Library, Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai Health System. She has experience in literature reviews, meta-analysis, cataloging, and information curation.
